How do I moderate my community?
Community management lives in the ⋯ menu in the community header. Select it, then choose Community settings. Settings are split into Details, Rules, Members, Requests, Activity and Review queue.
Owners and moderators
- The Owner controls the community's details: its name, description, images, token, Who can read and join and Who can start a thread. Only the owner can Make moderator, Remove as moderator, or Hand over ownership.
- Moderators can edit rules, invite people, answer join requests, review reports, remove content, pin and close threads, and block members.
Members and join requests
- Under Requests, select Approve or Decline for each person waiting to join.
- Use Invite someone to invite people by their nook username. Invitations skip the join queue.
- Under Members, select Block next to someone, or use Block an account with any username. Choose a Duration (one day, one week, one month, or indefinitely) and select Block account. They lose access to the community and its content.
- Blocked people are listed under Blocked accounts, where you can select Unblock.
Rules
Under Rules, select Add a rule (up to 10), then Save settings. Rules show on your community's page.
Posts and replies
- On a thread, select Pin thread to pin it to the top of the community.
- Select Close thread to stop new replies now or at a set time. Your reason is shown to everyone in the thread.
- Select Manage reply restrictions to stop one person replying to a thread, for a set time or Until restored.
- To remove a post or reply, select its ⋯ menu and choose Remove thread or Remove reply. The author sees a placeholder and is told it was removed.
Reports
You'll get a notification when something is reported. Open Review queue from the ⋯ menu or community settings. For each report, choose Leave unchanged, Dismiss report, Remove content or, under Remove content and ban the author, Remove and ban. Removing needs a short Decision note, which the author sees. Removed items can be put back with Restore.
Stepping back from a community
A community can't be deleted, as on Reddit: it belongs to the people in it as much as to its owner. If you no longer want to run yours, you can:
- Hand it over. Under Members, select Hand over next to an active member. They choose whether to accept, the offer lapses after seven days, and you stay on as a moderator.
- Quiet it. Under Details, set Who can read and join to Private · invitation only and Who can start a thread to Only moderators can start a thread. Current members keep their access, and you can change both back at any time.
If an owner stops appearing on nook for 30 days, a member of at least 30 days can ask to take over through Community recovery. See How do I hand over a community, or take over from an absent owner?
Every moderation action is recorded under Activity in the Moderation log. Owners who want to leave or close their account should hand the community over first.
